gas_stationHas anyone else noticed large numbers of Martial Arts studios popping up around the valley?  You know the kind I mean… For just 0 per month a twenty-something year old black belt will instruct you in Kung fu, Karate, Jiu Jitsui, Kick Boxing, and three other styles?

I have noticed a thread from folks who attend some of those classes.  I have heard a few people say the phrase, “I’ve only been training for a few months, but I am pretty confident that I could beat the crap out of my instructor if it really came down to it.”

Okay, so I know I am treading on this ice here.. I know this may raise the eyebrows or the ire of some who (rightfully so) point out that there is a lot more to the martial arts than that.  There is a spiritual aspect.  There is a control aspect.  There is technique that you can learn from an experienced instructor, even if you could leverage your size, strength, speed, or aggression to overpower him/her.  This is especially true with some of the most talented (and oldest) instructors.  Additionally, I know that the teacher can often learn more than the student, so we should be respectful to remember that we learn from people, even if they are what we consider “less skilled” than ourselves.

I get all that, and do not discount it.

But if you are paying a lot of money to a cookie cutting dojo, you might be getting taken for a ride.

I’m pleased to be able to say, without question, that my Sensei could fairly easily beat the hell out of me.  :)
