Interesting data on the martial arts in Utah
In putting this site together, and asking for local martial artists to contribute content, I did a fair amount of research into what people in Utah are actually looking for on the Internet as it pertains to the Martial Arts. As someone who follows the UFC, and most televised martial arts events, as well as someone very involved in Judo, I assumed that most people interested in the martial arts in Utah were probably like me, more or less.
I assumed that since Jiu Jitsu has seen such huge growth in recent years, and since most really successful fighters tend to be a mix of Mui Thai and Jiu Jitsu, that most people in Utah would be searching for Martial Arts, or Jiu Jitsu, or Mui Thai, Kickboxing, or MMA.
I was wrong.
What I found was that most Utahns do in fact search for “martial arts”. But a very close second is still “karate”. MMA is a trailer in third, and nothing else is really even close. I was a bit puzzled at first, but then I got to thinking about it… If you look at most Dojo’s,they do indeed have some serious practitioners of whatever martial art they teach. But the huge bulk of people training are still little kids. These kids are the bread and butter for Dojos, and hep keep them alive and paying rent.
So, since most of the market is for kids, the real question is: What are parents, who do not follow the martial arts themselves, looking for when they want their kids to learn something. It kinda makes sense once you consider it. It’s still amazing though, than with the huge rise in the UFC, MMA, and Jiu Jitsu popularity, that the next generation of martial artists, by and large, will be cutting their teeth in karate classes.
