Colored beltsThere are all sorts of people when it comes to the martial arts.  There are humble people, arrogant people, people looking for fitness, and people looking to fight.  When it comes to belts and advancement I have seen a lot of people who are always pushing, always wondering what exactly they need to do to earn that next rank advancement… Wanting to make their way to a brag-able ranking in record time. (these folks don’t tend to last long in Judo, and generally go looking for a Karate class after about six months)

Although I will not claim that I am one of the most humble people in the world, I have to say that when it comes to rank advancement I am timid.  I have been doing Judo for about a year and a half now, and have had my green belt for about half of that time.  But rather than being elated when I got it, I was a bit worried.  I craved my white belt.  I was concerned that having a green belt would mean that people would expect more from me… and I wasn’t convinced that I was actually able to deliver it.

Well, maybe it’s my lack of humility that I mentioned above, but afte wearing it for about 9 months, I finaly feel like my green belt fits.  I feel that I have advanced my skills, and that I actually deserve to wear it.  It feels good.
