Bob Sapp is a massive brute of a fighter that was extremely entertaining to watch in in Pride and K-1, but who has been a bit out of the spotlight for a while due to disagreements with K-1. Although he has been in a few promotion since then (Cage Rage, Strike Force), his visibility here in the states has definitely been on the low-down compared to several years ago (although he’s still practically a super-hero in Japan.)
Lashley is trying to follow in the footsteps of the now immensely visible, and well, immensely immense, Brock Lesnar (6’3″ 273lbs. of all muscle.) Lashley comes from a strong wrestling background, having wrestled in College, and in the Army. This will be only his third MMA fight.
I haven’t seen what kind of condition Bob Sapp is in for quite a while, but if it’s good, then I think Lashley will really have his hands full here…. perhaps too much to handle. Although, anyone can get knocked for a loop.
Wanna see what a concussion looks like? Wanna see what I think this fight will look like? Bob, can you show us your fight with Kimo to end this discussion for now?

For those of you that haven’t seen it, MTV has a new “Reality” show called Bully Beatdown. In this show, a picked on person or persons have Mayhem Miller show up, and offer a bully $10,000 to fight a real MMA fighter.
The catch is, that if the bully can’t hold their own, then the money actually goes to the poor, picked on victims.
In theory this may sound pretty good. But in reality… hmm… actually, I think that “reality” might be what’s missing here.
Okay, so if you go into this show expecting a “reality” show I think you will be disappointed. I don’t really believe the stories of the poor “victims”, and the shocking, surprise visit to the bully is anything but. It’s clearly a staged meeting after several other meetings leading up to it. Not to mention the fact that the victims and the bully have probably conspired to split the money anyway.
But wait… it’s just this type of a requirement for any real content that scared people away from true gems like the movie Starship Troopers (one of my favorites.) So let’s remove the need for reality, and instead focus on a good old butt kicking, where we get to see some poor shmuck try to go two rounds with a hardened fighter. On that it delivers.
I’m not sure how long that will be able to carry it. I think it will have to find something more to make it to season two. But in the meantime, I’ll be checking it out.

Okay, so I have some exciting news. Kall 700, the radio station that covers the U of U games, and Real soccer, is planning to start a weekly radio show (Friday evenings) to cover the local MMA scene. This show will also be doing live coverage of most of the big MMA fights here in the Valley.
As if that alone weren’t cool, the show will be hosted by Brandon Nielsen (a stud of a guy who already does another program of Kall 700), Matt Bishop (a really good friend of mine), and… wait for it… yours truly. I have to say, I am really excited about this.
More details to follow. The show should start up in about 6 weeks give or take.
Woot!

Let me begin this by prefacing that I’m a huge sports fan. I watch almost every major sport that there is and, although I may not follow them avidly, I find the pitting of teams and individuals in competition to be a breathtaking and honorous thing.
However, there is one major facet that sets combat sports far ahead of any other organized sport in the world- honesty. Watching two fighters; who have trained for months, followed rigorous exercise and diet schedules, watched countless hours of tape on their opponent and made multiple sacrifices to family and friends just to compete in one fight is about the most honest thing that someone can do for themselves.
In team sports, this honesty does not, and cannot exist for the simple fact that there is always someone to blame. You might show up. You might play your heart out making 12 of 12 freethrows and draining 8 three pointers, but if your teammates don’t show up, there is little you can do.
Fighting is not like that. When all the training and preparation is done, you are alone in that ring. You are the one that has to implement your game plan and defeat your opponenent. You are the one that has to make the best use of all the training you have put forward. You. Nobody else. That makes combat sports, in a word, honest.
Now, of course there are going to be excuses made after the match. MMA fighting has not progressed to the point that everyone is ok with a loss being a loss or a lackluster fight just being a slow fight with a victor at the end regardless. Those are completely seperate discussions from my current point. At the end of the day, whether you are Chuck Liddell knowing that this could be your last fight in the organization that you have been the poster boy of for years, or Bob Probert shedding the mitts to go one on one with Tie Domi a second time, or Nate “Galaxy Warrior” Campbell putting on the gloves for another fight just so your family can eat… well, that’s honesty, pure and simple, and in a dishonest world- that’s beautiful.

Some times called the straight ankle lock, or the Achilles hold, this ankle submission is a bugger. A guy can stack you in the guard, pop up and grab a leg as soon as your ankles become uncrossed. When he does, he basically puts a guillotine choke on your ankle and finishes the submission. It can happen really fast.
The real video gem is watching Carlos Machado go into the details of escaping and blocking the submission. The vid below is 8 minutes and goes into a lot of specifics.

In one of these videos, Rener Gracie says that the triangle is the definitive move of Gracie Jiu-Jiutsu. And who am I to argue? The triangle is a fantastic submission. Anyway, I’ll leave the details up to these pro’s.
In the video below, Rener talks you through an important part of the triangle – right after you get into what he calls “triangle setup”, you’ve got an arm and head of your opponent locked up, but the triangle isn’t on yet. Of course, their is freaking out. His suggestion? Shoulder walking.
To show us the way out, here is Renzo Gracie teaching about triangle choke defense.
