  • Jason “Mayhem” Miller and Nick Diaz brawl after Jake Shields, Henderson fight

Not sure how long it will be before the clip gets pulled down… but it’s here as long as it’s live.

What better place than main-stream to make a total ass of yourself and your sport?!

Minutes ago, during the post fight interview after the Jake Shields, Dan Henderson fight things got ugly.  This was on CSB, so we had the eyes of the world, seeing what they thought of this new MMA thing.  Mayhem Miller steps up to do a little smack talking to shields during his interview, about wanting a rematch.  Although in poor taste, it appeared that Mayhem was smiling, and didn’t intend for what happened next.

Jake Shields shoved Mayhem, and Nick Diaz, who was helping to corner for Hendo started throwing punches at Mayhem Miller.  From there things got crazy.  There were dog-piles on and fists flying everywhere.  It was like watch a massive WWE brawl.  CBS cut away in embarrassment.

I’ve never seen anything like it.  Guess what folks, we just went from being right up there with boxing to being somewhere between WWE, Nascar, and Roller Derby to millions of people.

    Way to go Jack Asses!

    1. A newer update on this from: http://www.bloodyelbow.com/2010/4/18/1428650/dan-henderson-team-mate-jason

Mayhem Miller walked into the cage and stood behind Shields during his victory interview. It appeared as if Gilbert Melendez did not appreciate Miller attempting to steal spotlight from Shields during Jake’s moment and went to push Miller off screen and out of the way. What ended was a scuffle in the cage, on what I assume, was live television. Included in the footage was what appeared to be Shields’s camp beating up Miller as security had to disperse the fight. If MMA wanted attention from the mainstream media they will probably now have it. Ignoring how the media reacts will be how CBS reacts and if they want disassociate themselves with this now. I am unsure how much was on live t.v. and how much attention it will get, but this is not a case of “no publicity is bad publicity.”

At first, I thought it was crazy but know I’m not so shocked by it.

I wonder what the average Joe thinks about it, seeing that this kind of scrapping happens in basketball, football, and certainly hockey. While I might frown and think, this has eroded MMA’s credibility, another viewer might think it’s the brawl was the buzz-worthy moment in a night of snoozefest fights.

Yes, bad for the sport as I see it – but I have a stronger stomach for “boring” technical fibhts and long grappling exchanges. I also care about MMA being taken seriously and going mainstream.

Also, I watched a post fight with Nick Diaz and that guy is smoked out. HARD. Kind of weird. Nick talked about the fight after the fight and said he didn’t even know went down.

One more thing: something similar did happen at UFC 45 . Tank Abbot and Cabbage almost go at it after the fight doc stops the match due to a cut. Cabbage does a dance, flips off Tank, a water bottle is thrown, and guys come in to separate a bubbling post-fight fight with coaches and fighters pretending to be in high school.

So what does Joe Rogan say about the whole thing?

This is just stupid, we don’t need this, this is stupid. These guys should be conducting themselves like professionals . It was unfortunate that there was a stoppage to the fight but this is ridiculous. John Marsh throwing a water bottle on a guy, he’s got other guys separating them … This is stupid. You know what … this has no place in the professional sport of mixed martial arts – guys taking cheap shots, piling on each other, throwing water bottles , this is while the sport is trying to gain mainstream acceptance. This is bullshit. It is the last stuff we need.

Gus Johnson’s commentary on the Strike Force debacle:

Alright, ah … sometimes these things happen … in MMA, a lot of testosterone in the cage. Gentlemen, we’re on national television. Gentlemen! We’re on national television. We are going to step away right now on CBS and be back right after this.
