FOO.NET: You’ve been around the MMA scene for a while; do you remember the first song that you walked out to and what event was it?
Nick:Well let’s see, the first song I ever walked out to was Bia, Bia by lil Jon & the organization was a show done by Griff Reynos & my opponent was Nate Veldhouse.
FOO.NET: The last handful of fights you’ve been coming out to Eminem, is there a reason and which song is it exactly?
Nick: The Eminem thing came from Dana white himself when I was a guest on the ultimate fighter. He said “this dude right here is the slim shady of MMA & it stuck. The song itself is remixes by a buddy of mine. It starts out with “the real slim shady” & is mixed into a Maino song that has reference to my way of living & growing up as a child & the struggle I’ve been through.
FOO.NET: What kind of music do you listen to, do you have a favorite band? Singer? Genera?
Nick: I listen to really all sorta music, from country, hip-hop, R&B to dubstep, techno & rock. I don’t have a favorite band, but there are a few people I dig. I like music that hits close to home for me. I really listen to music when I play it, lyrics and all and if it makes me feel good then I’ll usually bump it.
FOO.NET: Does music do anything for you when you’re in the gym?
Nick: Music does a lot for me, I think it does a lot for a lot of fighters. It can give u that pump u need, it can even calm u down.
FOO.NET: If you could download 3 Albums on Cricket’s Muve and take it with you on to a deserted island what would they be?
Nick: 3 albums I’d bring with me would be, hmmm, Michael Bublè-live @ Madison square garden. Bad Meets Evil-welcome to hell & last but not least ummm, Rascal Flatts album.

This Friday two forces will finally meet for the VERY first time. Americas sweetheart “Filthy” Phil Henderson and Comedian/Actor/Blogger/Sex Symbol, Jose “Da Baby Gorilla” Bacio (a.k.a. Smyle-Fu), are teaming up and co-announcing this Friday’s STEELFIST FIGHT NIGHT event. There’s even rumors that Internet phenomenon Rebeca Black will be performing her hit single “Friday” to start things off.
NOTE: Rebecca Black will not be in attendance, nor will the song.
I had the pleasure of interviewing my cage announcing partner of mayhem, Phil Henderson. You might recognized him as the District Manager at the Southern Exposure night club or former co-host of the UCE televison series, but many know him as that guy from that episode of Jerry Springer. You know which one I’m talking about.
SMYLE-FU: Phil you’re going to be co-announcing with one of Utah’s biggest voice in the MMA scene, Jose “Da Baby Gorilla” Bacio. You must be super ecstatic to work with such a talented and yet handsome individual who has been in two Straight-to-DVD Mormon Movie classics, right?
PHIL: Man, I’m SUPER EXCITED to get back into the local MMA scene here in Utah. I cant wait to do some work with the Baby Gorilla.
SMYLE-FU: Who could blame you Phil? There is a waiting list of over ten dozen people who would like to work with me. I’ve done some digging and found out that you weren’t only part of Ken Shamrocks Lion Den, but you use to fight in the cage. How was it like training under the “Worlds Most Dangerous Man”?
PHIL: Ya that’s old school right there. Well when I was serving our country in the US Coast Guard, doing Search and Rescue and Drug Enforcement, I had a friend who trained there and he invited me up. I got to train with Mo Smith, Jerry Bohlander, Guy Mezgers, Pete Williams, Mikey Burnett, Ken and Frank Shamrock which was just awesome. After 9 months of training I tried out for their team, with Marco Ruas brother, and made the LAST original Lions Den Team… but the next day I woke up and something was wrong with my kidneys and my legs. I had to have Emergency Surgery to relieve blood clotting and circulation in my legs. Half a Million dollars in doctor bills and 6 months of not walking later, I was back in the Coast Guard waiting to get released. The Lions Den Broke up, so I went out to Mikey Burnetts Lions Den in Tulsa and fought out of there a few times, but it was just never the same. I use to be able to dunk a basketball and after the leg surgery I was struggling dunking donuts. I fought a few more times here in Utah until I got another kidney infection and that’s when I threw in the towel.
SMYLE-FU: That’s a pretty cool story. Now, I understand that you’re no stranger to cage announcing, in fact you were a co-host on the U.C.E. television show for 2 years. What can you tell us what the fans can expect at the STEELFIST FIGHT EVENT July 29th?
PHIL: Of course Baby G. I think what fans are going to see is something a little different. We are going to bring a lot of energy and excitement when we hit the cage. We are going to have contests, giveaways and HOTTTTTT GIRLS GIRLS GIRLS into this show. I love the the fights at these other shows, but I always felt that it was missing something. I want to bring a club atmosphere to this event and that is something I’m really good at. I totally expect most people to leave the show going, “Hey ya know what? That was exciting from start to finish and I was entertained even when there wasn’t fights going on.”
SMYLE-FU: I gotta know… will the ladies of Southern Exposure be present at this event? And if so what are the chances of one of them accepting my proposal for marriage?
PHIL: Southern Xposure is the Main Sponsor of SteelFist Fight Night. You are for sureeeee going to see a lot of the girls there. We have a booth and will be providing the Ring Girls; its going to be a Great Time!! I think the chances are one in a million of them Marrying you, but hey Kid you got a chance!!!
SMYLE-FU: Well Phil as long as I have a chance for true happiness then I’ll take it. You’re not only doing cage announcing, but you’re also involved in negotiations with some of the sponsors. Is this leading up to a partnership with Steelfist? Will Phil Henderson be a major player in this company?
PHIL: Officially I’m a Consultant and I think that is where I will stay. I have known Kevin Patton since well forever, grew up together in West Jordan. I’ve known his wife forever and their whole family so for me this is more about family and friends and helping them get this thing to be a big deal in Utah. I could always use more money, but being the District Manager for Southern Xposure and all of their clubs I am not where I really need to worry about money. I’m making a Great Living doing what I do, so I can put in a lot of effort and connections without having to worry about what my slice of the pie is. Kevin is taking care of me… trust me, but ya I’m in a good position where I can go out use my connections and secure sponsors and open doors. We have got some great Sponsors coming to the table for this show and I’m happy as could be!!!
SMYLE-FU: Last Question: Who do you think will win Cole Rose or Jarome Hatch? and be honest. I know you are buds with both of them, but in the words of Duncan McCloud there could only be one… and then he chopped off his opponents head.
PHIL: Oh buddy this Main Event is going to be like a don’t Blink main event, someone is getting knocked out. im friends with Cole and I dont know Jarome that well, but have been around him for years since he started fighting. I like the kid a lot; he comes to fight and no Bullshit with this guy .. my honest opinion is whoever lands first is going to win THIS FIGHT COULD BE OVER IN 10 SECS. Seriously they are both coming out to knock each other out its going to be intense. Those are my favorite fights when its like 2 Rams running head first into each other and ya don’t know which one is gonna fall down. I’d really like to see the Winner fight Jake Paul again.. Im just saying…..
Don’t forget the Weigh-ins will be held at BATTERS UP (1700 S. Main St.) on THURSDAY at 7PM and the Post-Fight Party will be at SOUTHERN EXPOSURE (3420 S. Main St.).

Submission Fight Co.’s Submission Light is a lightweight competition-worthy gi that will appeal to the eye as well as the wallet. Adopting a ripstop trouser and a pearl-weave top, this gi is equipped with the standard reinforcements you would expect on any gi worth its salt. It can take a beating with the best of them, as you will see if you read on.
Stylistically it scores high points, adopting an attractive red and black color scheme with contrast stitching and snazzy taping around the hem and down the pant legs.
At 4lbs 3 oz, it’s not the lightest or the softest gi out there. But it’s still in the light category and wears a lot like other light weight gis I own.
I asked for an A4 trouser with an A3 jacket, and Shakib at SFC graciously obliged. Both fit very well; I enjoyed the long cut on the trousers and the roominess of the jacket. It’s not shaving the IBJJF competition limits like the Black Eagle Predator MKII, but it fits me well without being restrictive.

Looks like TUF alum DaMarques ”Darkness” Johnson is going to be fighting for us sooner then we though! Ultimate FIghting Championship (UFC) announced the booking, which will take place at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center in New Orleans, La., on Sept. 17, 2011, earlier this evening via its official website.
Johnson, a runner up on season nine of The Ultimate Fighter, has dropped two of his last three bouts. He holds an even (3-3) record inside the Octagon, losing his most recent fight to Amir Sadollah. “Darkness” clearly needs a win over “Heavy Metal” to stay on the winning side of things.
So be sure to tune in September 17th and cheer on a local that has made it to the big show!

So, first a bit about myself:
I am a big guy. I’m 6 feet tall, and about 260 pounds.
Also, I am one of the most advanced students at the dojo where I train. Especially when it comes to big guys. Most of the large guys at my dojo (other than my instructors) are white belts.
So, here’s my problem: I am used to either rolling with people who are smaller than me, or people who are less experienced than me (or both.) What this means, is that I tend to be in dominant position a lot, and when I’m not, I don’t tend to panic much, because I’m either stronger or more experienced than the person on top of me (or both.)
The result is that I don’t often get in serious trouble form someone big. But this means that I’m really not very used to that situation. the result (unfortunately) is that when I do get there, I panic and tap.
I’ll be honest, this is all a little embarrassing to say. But it’s something I’m determined to overcome.
Last night I rolled for a while with Bill, one of my instructors at Hidden Valley. Bill is a big, strong guy with great experience and technique. I spent the first little bit on top, actually pretty pleased with myself, and how I was doing. But eventually I got rolled onto bottom, and Bill started to work toward a submission. As soon as he got even close to it, I panicked and tapped. I wasn’t hurting. I wasn’t stuck. WTF??
It was almost like a weird claustrophobic panic or something. As soon as I thought there was now way out, I tapped instead of fighting.
I throw this out there, not as advice to anyone. But to just let you know, that if this is you too, then you’re not alone. I intend to fix this. I’ll let you know how it goes.

No use sugar-coating it. My Macbook Pro died last week. Or, at least the hard drive did…right in the middle of a backup.
I was hoping that it would be fixed by now so I could finish up some of the crucial parts of my Submission Light gi review and post them this evening. Unfortunately, it’s still out of commission and an important segment of the review is not completed as a result.
Today I got another computer with the right software that I’ll be using to finish the job. Sorry about the delay, especially to Shakib at Submission Fight Co., who sent me the gi quite a while ago and has been waiting patiently.
